Term Definition

Celestial Equator

The Celestial Equator is the extension of Earth's equator out into space. A planet's position north or south of this plane measures its Declination.

Celestial Latitude

Celestial Latitude measures the "up-and-down" position of a planet relative to the Ecliptic. It is entirely different from Earth's geographic latitudes.

Eclipse

Eclipses occur when the Moon and Earth are aligned so precisely that one passes through the other's shadow (cast by the Sun). Solar Eclipses are supercharged New Moons and Lunar Eclipses are supercharged Full Moons.

Synonyms: occultation

Eclipse Times

You may find that the time given for an eclipse varies slightly from one information source to another. Here's why.

Equinox

Equinox.

Full Moon

A Full Moon happens when the Moon is opposite the Sun, and is the half-way point of the 29-day lunar cycle. It is usually a time of high energy, when emotions are fully open.

Lunar Eclipse

A Lunar Eclipse is a Full Moon that is so precisely aligned, the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow cast by the Sun. This precision makes the Full Moon extra powerful. There are at least 2 lunar eclipses per year.

New Moon

A New Moon happens when the Moon is conjunct the Sun. It is the starting point of the 29-day lunar cycle. It is often a time of low energy, when it seems to go underground or unconscious.

Solar Eclipse

A Solar Eclipse is a New Moon that is so precisely aligned that the Moon casts a shadow on the Earth. This precision makes the New Moon extra powerful. There are at least 2 solar eclipses per year.

Waxing & Waning

Waxing refers to when two planets are moving farther apart (after conjunction and before opposition). Waning is when two planets are moving closer together (after opposition and before conjunction). They tend to indicate a building or dissipation of energy.
